20-Jul-10 Start Up parent Charlotte Goodwin takes away a prestigious award
|
Start Up Citywide parent crowned 'Outstanding Learner of the Year'
Charlotte Goodwin, a member of the Start Up Citywide programme, has won a coveted award at LearnDirect's West Midlands Regional Celebration. Nominated by Start Up Citywide partners at Mitchell Business and Enterprise College, who offer LearnDirect provision from their Community Learning Centre, Charlotte won the accolade of 'Outstanding Learner of the Year', beating off competition from 150 other contenders. Congratulations to Charlotte and also her Start Up Citywide Support Worker, Sonia Barlow and the Mitchell team for their support throughout. Fingers crossed as Charlotte moves to the national finals in London! |

Celebrating Success of Learners at North Staffs YMCA
On July 20th, over 140 people attended the annual Community Training Awards Event at North Staffs YMCA. The event, which celebrated the successes of learners from both Community Training and Start Up Citywide, saw more than 75 learners receive certificates, including the award of "Student of the Year". This year, the prestigious accolade was shared by Sarah Elsmore and Brett Palmer in recognition of their fantastic achievements while at Community Training and their gaining of apprenticeships. The event provided an excellent forum to demonstrate achievements of learners from across the city - well done everyone! See also: The Sentinel: Story, In Quotes

NSY Radio... tune in now! NSY Radio is up and broadcasting live from its city centre studios at North Staffs YMCA! Offering the best in music and chat, the station is on the lookout for new talent so if you think you can cut it as a DJ, be a contributor or just want to see what it involves, get in touch.
As part of the launch, over 50 singers, bands, DJs and performers descended on Keele University for what proved to be an amazingly varied and enjoyable experience.
The NSY Radio team put on their first community DJ workshop which went down a storm, introducing people young and old to the toe tapping world of DJing. Many young people benefited from these workshops learning new skills and gaining confidence.

Start Up Citywide wins prestigious awards, parents honoured At last night's LearnMore Awards, the glitzy event celebrating North Staffordshire's talents, the YMCA's Start Up Citywide programme stole the spotlight winning the Award for Most Inspirational Educator. The programme was also a finalist in the Award as Most Active in the Community, in recognition of the hard work and dedication support coaches have shown across the city. Indeed, Viv Baskeyfield, Support Coach in Meir, was commended in the Community Champion for "unleasing potential" of those she works with. The hard work of parents on the programme was collectively recognised with Charlotte Goodwin from Blurton recognised in the Learner of the Year award having grasped the opportunities available to her. YMCA Boxing Show a Smash North Staffs YMCA’s Boxing Club first ever club show saw ten club boxers taking part in a 14 bout show… and seven walked away with winners’ trophies! The packed out event at Bucknall Bowling Club saw opposing boxers arrive from as far afield as Dudley, Northampton, Liverpool and Derby.
The YMCA camp’s Dylan Buxton came through a very tough fight with Northampton’s Dave Wright. Already Staffordshire champion at 44kg, Dylan has an impressive record of 9 bouts with 8 wins. Another star was James Wilton who came through after an absolute toe to toe hum dinger with Abbey Hulton club's Peter Jones. James’ record now stands at 5 fought, 5 won.
